Geoffry Chadwick Misadventure 3
A lively comedy of manners – bad manners – with just a hint of crime
LOS ANGELES—July 28, 2020—Edward O. Phillips returns with the third installment in a sophisticated urban comedy of manners set in Montreal starring Geoffry Chadwick – “SUNDAY BEST”.
“A highly polished gem of a novel on Montreal mores and manners … delightful reading on a wintry Sunday afternoon”
— Ian Mayer, Toronto Star
Geoffry Chadwick is back and this time the reluctant hero and social observer is going to a wedding – or maybe not. Geoffry’s niece, Jennifer, is about to marry Douglas, son of a prominent – or at the very least notorious – Montreal socialite, Lois Fullerton. Lois is a wealthy widow with an impressive list of discarded lovers and it looks like she’s decided Geoffry will be her next conquest. But after meeting Lois on several occasions, Chadwick discovers he is being followed. Soon a nasty knife wound – on the front tire of his car – and a nasty note thicken the plot. Has Lois masterminded a trap? Who is her suspicious, swarthy, and sexy chauffeur? And why is the bridegroom more interested in his future brother-in-law than his future bride? A lively misadventure of manners – bad manners – with just a hint of crime.
“The best [Geoffrey Chadwick novel] … captures all the wit, the bon mots, the flavour of Montreal, the comedy of manners.”
— Violette Malan
Elaine Kalman Naves, writing in the Montreal Gazette at the time of the initial publication said: “The real meat and potatoes of the book are dished up in Geoffrey’s ironical opinions and epigrams. He skewers everything and everyone. Enjoy it for its waspish verbal zingers, its satire of convention and its wry insights.”
First published in 1990, this 2020 edition contains a tribute to the author by ReQueered Tales Founding Partner Alexander Inglis.
PUBLISHER’S NOTE: As we go to press, we have learned Mr Phillips has passed away in his beloved Westmount on 30 May, 2020. In Mr. Phillips own words in 2012: “Although I have been called a ‘mystery’ writer, a sobriquet harder to shake than that of a shoplifter or student activist, I consider my books to be social novels. Any slight element of mystery or suspense is there to illuminate character and not provide thrills or shivers.” He was a great observer of social mores and pared with the witty sword of an Oscar Wilde. This treasured icon of Canadian fiction will be sorely missed.
